Tax agents lodging SMSF Annual Return 2017 will need to use the Practitioner Lodgment Service (PLS) from 11 November 2017, the ATO has announced.
The Practitioner Lodgment Service (PLS) is gradually replacing the Electronic Lodgment Service (ELS) as the way to electronically lodge returns with the ATO. PLS is part of Standard Business Reporting (SBR).
The ATO has announced that SMSF Annual Return 2017, Fund income tax return 2017 and Trust tax return 2017 will only be able to be lodged electronically through PLS from 11 November 2017. FBT returns and partnership tax returns have already moved to the PLS. ELS for company and individual tax returns is set to end in 2018.
Some SMSF software already supports PLS and accountants may already be lodging using PLS.
“If you are not already using the PLS to lodge these forms, your digital service provider will guide you on the best time to make the switch,” says the ATO.
“Not only will the PLS lay the foundation for future enhanced services in your software, it will also improve how you currently prepare and lodge returns, activity statements and schedules with us,” says the ATO.
“All other forms, services and reports will be progressively removed from the ELS based on our discussions with software providers. These include activity statements, client lists and client updates. We’ll let you know when we plan to remove any other services.”
